Your jaw unhinges as you seek to inhale the animating spark of number of chosen mortal creatures in range, killing them instantly. The spell slays 1d4 HD worth of living creatures per two caster levels (maximum 10d4). If the creature fails her save, she dies instantly and automatically extract 1 Life Essence that flies to your hand. The destroyed creature does not have a chance to generate a Life Essence naturally, if Extract Essence is cast on it later. However, this does not affect the percentage chance of other Essence types or the extraction of imbued Life Essences. Of the chosen creatures, those with the fewest HD are affected first; among those chosen creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the burst’s point of origin are affected first. No creature who possesses more HD than you are affected, and HD that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted.
A living creature targeted by this spell makes Fortitude save. If that character saves successfully, she still gains 1 Negative Level due to the stress on her vital spark. Assuming the subject survives, it regains its lost level after a number of hours equal to your caster level (maximum 15 hours). Usually, negative levels have a chance of becoming permanent, but the negative level from Swallow Soul don’t last long enough to do so.
An undead creature targeted by this spell a Will save at a -2 penalty because its Life Essence is less rooted in the material world than if it were a living creature. However, an undead creature takes no further penalty from the spell if it succeeds on its Will save.
